I hope this will help you in your search as much as it has helped me. From my own searches I can say the words (titles) to give to your local book merchant, so that she or he can look up a latin bible, are these: BIBLIA SACRA or NOVUM TESTAMENTUM good luck!!! If you choose to do this, do not ask for a copy of the Vulgate, because in "Books in Print" this is not the way that it appears. Ask for either the Vulgata or the Novum Testamentum. Hope this helps. You should be able to get their address and phone number from any Christian bookstore. I recently ordered one as a Christmas present for my fiance, and it seems pretty good. I think you need to ask for "Biblia Sacra Vulgata - Stuttgart Edition". A Christian bookstore should also have a catalog from American Bible Society that you can look through. If you need me to, I can look up the exact order number and information on my receipt when I get home. Status: O They shouldn't be too hard to find. I know there are a couple in the Harvard Divinity School bookstore here in Cambridge (I realize that you're probably not going to just drop in this evening, I just meant that any well-stocked theological bookstore should have one. ;) Anyway, it's hard to believe that there's not one _somewhere_ near UCDavis. In any case, if you can't find any other sources, let me know and maybe we can work out getting a copy from here. Another real good bet would probably be Christian Book Distributors in Peabody. They do a *great* mail-order/catalogue business; huge inventory and great customer service. I don't have a catalogue handy, so I don't know if they're carrying a Vulgate --although it would surprise me if they were not-- but they they have a customer-service/ reference hotline number that you could call and they can tell you what they have. Hope this helps. Nichael From: "Michael A. I don't have their address on me, but you can call information to get their toll-free number. They'll send you a catalog for free, and the Vulgate Bible should be listed under "Scholarly Resources." In the meantime, head on over to the main library-I'm sure they have one there. If you want me to look for the Bible Society's address, write me. I found mine in a university bookstore and that's probably the best place to look or order from. No scholarly apparatus, but plenty of cross-references. It was not very expensive when I bought my copy; I have heard recently that it is however fairly expensive in Spain. -- miner@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu | Graecis ac barbaris, sapientibus, et opinions are my own | insipientibus debitor sum From: psyhtjs@unicorn.nott.ac.uk (T.Sneath) Message-Id: <9212141550.AA10285@unicorn.nott.ac.uk> To: jygabler@ucdavis.ucdavis.edu Subject: Re: LATIN/VULGATE Bibles Newsgroups: soc.religion.christian In-Reply-To: Organization: Cripps Computing Centre, University of Nottingham Content-Type: text Content-Length: 841 Scripture Union Bookshops in England sell them (although that's not much use to you!). The most accessible Latin bible is the one from the Biblioteca de Autores Cristianos published in Madrid, edited by Colunga and Turrado. It is listed in Books in Print, I think (maybe under "biblia sacra vulgata" or something like that). There is also the one published by the Stuttgart Bibelgesellschaft, which is not based on the Clementinan Vulgate (the one published during the Counter-Reformation) but rather on a rescension of the available medieval MSS. Unlike the Colunga/Turrado version, the Stuttgart Vulgate has no punctuation, so it's a little hard to use. The Stuttgart edition has been published in Macintosh machine-readable format by Linguists' Software. Yours, Brian -- Brian W. This copy copyright 1983; originally 1969. Its ISBN is 3-438-05303-9. It appears to be published by Deutsche Bibelgelsellschaft, of Stuttgart. I obtained it at the Harvard University Divinity School Bookstore. I suspect that any local div school bookstore would have it, or that at the worst the Harvard Divinity School bookstore could send you one. I'm not entirely sure of the address, I'm afraid. It's like a normal Bible, with two columns per page, various references in the margins, and no English anywhere in the book except for the preface. It's really quite nice, even though the cover is green fake leather. Hope this information helps. I would suggest looking in a Catholic book shop. The version they'll carry will be the Douai-Reims edition of the Bible (which was published, in part by English Catholics who fled the Reformation in the 16th century). I suggest this version, mostly because that will probably be the only one you can find in Latin (Protestants have this thing about the vernacular). A local Catholic parish priest could, no doubt, point you in the right direction. Other than that, a theological college with a hankering for history might have such an object. A Catholic seminary should. University libraries would be a good place to look too. Bona fortuna!
