The information here was sent before the web was in common use. There are now a number of good web-based sources on Islam. One recommended by the Rutgers religion department's "Virtual Religion Index" is www.islam.org. Message-ID: Sender: news@mentor.cc.purdue.edu (USENET News) Organization: Purdue University References: Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1993 07:21:58 GMT Lines: 161 ...................................................................... Dear Moderator, I thank you very much for your kindness so far to permit my postings about Islam in this newsgroup... This is my last letter for now in the discussion about Islam here... ...................................................................... Dear readers of newsgroup soc.religion.christian, I think this is my last posting for now in this newsgroup in the discussions concerning my religion, Islam. I will be leaving soon outside the US, and God willing, I will return here before the start of Fall semester this year. So, I ask God forgiveness and I also ask you pardon if so far in my postings there were mistakes that I made... For this moment, I just want to ask anybody who are interested in studying Islam, PLEASE READ the books written by good Muslim scholars, who put their arguments from the main source of Islam: the Qur'an, and the Hadith (the traditions of Prophet Muhammad -pbuh-), or ASK any knowledgable Muslims near you to get the TRUE information of Islam. PLEASE DO NOT TRUST TOTALLY any non-Muslim scholars who write writings about Islam. I saw many books here in campus library and book- stores written by non-Muslims about Islam and its Prophet Muhammad. Some of them are seemed to be "objective" but have hidden motives to bring the reader to another direction than telling the truth, some are obviously showing religious prejudices (like in middle ages), which do not reflect an honest spirit of enquiry, rather to arouse the feeling of HATRED and FURY against Muslims, and some others are objective. Ofcourse you do not trust totally books written by Muslim scholars about Christianity, do you? There are many groups in the world who claim to represent Islam and call their adherents Muslims. Any serious student of Islam has a duty to investigate and find the true Islam. Like I said before, the only two authentic sources which bind every Muslim are: (1) the Qur'an, as the very words of God Almighty, (2) the authentic or sound Hadith, as the traditions of Prophet Muhammad, sometimes we need also the Fiqh (jurispudence), as opinions of learned early Muslim scholars, to explain the meaning of the verses or the Prophet tradition to be used in nowadays life. Any teachings or actions under the label of "Islam" which contradict or are at variance with the direct understanding of FUNDAMENTAL beliefs and practises of Islam from the Qur'an and authentic Hadith should be rejected and such a religion should be considered a PSEUDO-ISLAMIC CULT. An honest attitude on the part of such cults should be not to call themselves Muslims and their religion Islam. The foundation of Islam consists of TAWHEED (faith), RISALAH (the authentic history of Prophet Muhammad), and AAKHIRAH (the concept of life in hereafter). Five pillars of Islam are: (should be based on the Qur'an and the Hadith) - Shahada (Creed: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is Allah's Messenger), - Salah (Prayer: five times a day), - Zakah (Obligatory Alm, given to poor people), - Sawm (Fasting, obligatory fasting in the month of Ramadan), - Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca). The rest of the building consists of SHARI'AH which includes DOs and DON'Ts, rights and duties, moral code, conveying the message of Allah, implementation of Allah's command, and excellence -manners- in everyday life/actions. Any claims of Islam should be judged on the criteria given above. If the foundation and pillars of a building are demolished, there is no building left. In the end of this letter, I include a list of some good books about Islam written by Muslim scholars. By the way, recently, I read an article about "Christ in Islam" in soc.religion.islam, which I think it's good for you to read for additional knowledge about Islam. I hope, this will bring some light concerning Islam in the mind of the readers here... Hopefully, we will meet again here sometimes... Thanks for your kindness so far, especially for the moderator...
